Why is another CAD format than STL asked for with the milling technique?

An STL file is basically a “dead" model that comprises a very limited geometry description, just enough for processing on 3D printers and rapid prototyping machines. For the 3D CNC milling of components, the original CAD format (STEP or preferably Parasolid) offers more possibilities for working up to an optimum end result.
