Why can a machine design often not be scaled down and printed?

If for example, a machine is constructed from steel profiles or pipes 5 mm thick, and this is scaled down by a factor of 10, then a wall thickness of only 0.5 mm remains in the model. This is too unstable to be built real via a 3D printer. In practice, it often comes down to the fact that scale models have to be drawn and supplied to the right size in 3D CAD.
