Vacuum casting from silicone mould as technology for 3D prototyping

The casting of a polyurethane plastic in a silicone mould under vacuum is a cost effective way to realize a 0-series of products in the short term. After finishing the cast product can hardly be distinguished from a product from an injection moulding tool and is regularly used by clients as the end solution.

How does it work?

The silicone mould is usually cast from a master model. The master model is usually realized with CNC milling technique or SLA. The moment the silicone mould has hardened, the master model may be removed and the mould cavity is ready for casting under vacuum. By selecting a specific polyurethane material, properties or materials can by attained along the lines of PP, ABS or rubber-like materials. 2K, 3K or over-moulded components can also be realized without problems.

Depending on model, material and processing properties, 20-30 castings can be realized from 1 silicone mould.

RapidPrototyping.NL offers a unique price/quality ratio in combination with short lead times of 1.5 weeks if desired. This being irrespective of the dimensions, complexity or size of the project. Or from ‘hand terminal’ format to complete central heating boiler housings.
